The genius of September is giving the key of this delightful\ngarden to the groom; in her other hand she is carrying a horn with the heads of\nlittle children to indicate a fertile offspring. At the lower left one of the\nCupids is playing his lyre, symbolizing the harmony of the marriage. (In the\npoems the groom is praised for his outstanding play on the lyre.) Outside the\nframe at the right is an apple tree, at the top the trunk is without fruits,\nwhich is an illusion the marriage which has metaphorically speaking not yet\nbloomed.
